Recommended podcasts for writers

Like many authors with a full-time job, I have limited time to write. As much as I want to learn more about writing and publishing, I hate diverting time from the task of putting words on a page. Listening to podcasts in the car is one way I solve this problem. I listen to both "craft" oriented programs, which focus on writing technique, and business oriented ones about getting published.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Narrative Breakdown: Covers a wealth of storytelling tips and techniques, often referencing popular books, movies, and TV shows. Its panel discussions and interviews address both the craft of writing and the business of publishing.

Writing Excuses: I had to appreciate the tagline: "Fifteen minutes long, because you're in a hurry, and we're not that smart." This is a fast-paced, no-nonsense program packed with great info and perspectives. The topics are focused and often very pertinent to my own work. It's kind of an ugly website but a great resource. Probably my current favorite.

Writer 2.0: Writer and professor A.C. Fuller interviews authors and other professionals. "Featuring interviews with authors, journalists, screenwriters, and publishing experts, the show will illuminate the writing process, explore the publishing industry, and discuss excellent books."

Podcasts for writers of Science Fiction and Fantasy

Imaginary Worlds - I'm really enjoying this bi-weekly exploration of topics that spring from the heart of SF and fantasy and stretch to the edge of popular culture, from the concept of an Evil Empire to the popularity of zombies.

Coode Street Podcast - Critic Gary K. Wolfe and editor Jonathan Strahan bring a keen knowledge of the world of literary science fiction to wide-ranging discussions of the current state of publishing.

Podcasts for self-publishing authors

These podcasts focus on the indie world of self-publishing. They serve as marketing platforms for their authors, so there's a certain amount of self-promotion involved, but they also contain a wealth of info about this world.

The Self-Publishing Podcast - Three collaborative writers share their strategies for running a high-productivity empire of self-published works. Often NSFW.

The Creative Penn - Author Joanna Penn discusses indie publishing with guests. Her site also offers a "blueprint" for aspiring self-publishers.
