first lines

In the beginning

Several of my stories began life as a stray first line, a fluttering scrap of words that blew into mind when I was driving or falling asleep. From that small knot of storytelling DNA, an entire narrative unpacked itself, a tree imprinting the instructions for its creation on the resources around it.
