Bad CGI is bad

The most recent installments of Star Wars and Mad Max received acclaim for their use of practical effects, limiting the use of CGI special effects. I thought the effects in both films looked great, and I'm one of those people for whom a lousy CG effect instantly yanks me out of the narrative, breathes the scent of hot solder in my face, and upends my popcorn. As much as I liked the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Gollum's slight whiff of artificiality drove me nuts - he just wasn't in those shots, no matter how hard they tried to squeeze him in the frame.

But the reason I dislike CG isn't necessarily CG, and this video provides irrefutable evidence why.
